5&Dime (2022)
American Music Theatre Project at Northwestern University
Music: Dan Gillespie Sells
Lyrics: Shakina Nayfack
Book: Ashley Robinson
Director: Amanda Dehnert
Producer: Brannon Bowers
Role: Sissy
“In an old 5&Dime store in a dried-up West Texas town, the ‘Disciples of James Dean’ gather for their twentieth reunion. In 1955 when they were just teenagers, the Hollywood masterpiece GIANT, starring James Dean, was filmed in the neighboring town of Marfa. As the ladies reminisce about their youth, the arrival of a stunning-but-familiar stranger exposes bitter disappointments, delusions, and long-suppressed truths, unearthing bonds the disciples didn’t know they had.” (AMTP)
“Sissy (late 30’s) is a woman who has moved away with big dreams of becoming a country singer and ended up back in her tiny home town. She loves sex and isn’t shy about it, which has always gotten her in a lot of trouble in this conservative town. She is a breast cancer survivor but keep her mastectomy a secret. She has a huge heart and cares deeply about Mona’s son, Jimmy Dean.” (Ashley Robinson)
After this workshop reading at Northwestern University, 5&Dime went on to Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in NYC and starred Carolee Carmello, Lauren Marcus, and other Broadway actors. The world premiere production is set to be performed at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.
